Welcome to Our Curriculum
At The World Outside Kindergarten, our curriculum is guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and shaped by the needs, interests, and curiosity of the children in our care.
We provide a rich, nature-based learning experience that prepares children not just for school — but for life.

How Children Learn With Us
Our curriculum isn’t a rigid plan. It’s a flexible, responsive journey built around what excites and engages each child.
We often start with themes or shared topics like seasonal changes or storybooks — but we’re never afraid to go off plan. If the children’s interests take them in a new direction, we follow!
Some of our best learning moments happen when a planned theme is left behind in favour of something far more meaningful to the children.

Nurturing the Whole Child
We focus on every aspect of a child’s development:
-
Physically – through movement, climbing, balance, and real physical tasks
-
Emotionally – helping children understand and express feelings
-
Socially – through friendships, turn-taking, and teamwork
-
Cognitively – by encouraging curiosity, problem-solving, and decision-making
-
In early literacy and maths – through storytelling, counting, patterns in nature, and mark-making outdoors
How We Teach
We don’t stand at the front of a classroom.
Our teaching happens in the moment, through:
-
Carefully observing children
-
Listening to their ideas and questions
-
Offering support or challenge when it’s needed
-
Shaping the environment and activities around each child’s next steps
-
Our team know when to step back and observe and when to step in to guide. Planning isn’t stuck in folders — it happens through thoughtful conversations and ongoing reflection.

How We Track Progress
We don’t measure success by ticking boxes.
Instead, we notice and celebrate all the ways your child is growing — not just in what they know, but in who they are becoming.
This could be:
-
Feeling confident to speak up
-
Solving a tricky problem with a friend
-
Managing their own clothing
-
Telling a brilliant story around the fire
We make sure every child is seen, understood, and supported as an individual.
Physical Foundations for Learning
Children move constantly at The World Outside — climbing, running, digging, balancing.
These activities build:
-
Core strength
-
Coordination and control
-
Fine motor skills needed for things like writing and focusing later on
They also learn early maths, literacy, and communication skills in real, hands-on ways — through storytelling, counting natural objects, making maps, and more.

Building Cultural Capital
We recognise that every child arrives with their own experiences of the world — and we aim to build on those and expand them.
We offer:
-
A wide range of hands-on experiences
-
Exposure to different stories, traditions, languages, and ways of life
-
A setting where children feel seen, valued, and included
From using tools and celebrating festivals, to exploring seasonal change or visiting local places — we help children make sense of the world and feel confident within it.
Curriculum Summary
At The World Outside Kindergarten, our curriculum is rooted in nature, led by the child, and guided by the EYFS.
Through real play and real experiences, we nurture every aspect of your child’s development — helping them grow into curious, capable, confident learners.
We give them the skills they need to be truly school ready — not just able to sit still or hold a pencil, but ready to learn, relate, and thrive.

Learning in Nature
Our classroom is the great outdoors. Children spend their days:
-
Building dens
-
Mixing potions in the mud kitchen
-
Climbing, balancing, and moving freely
-
Sharing stories around the fire
-
Caring for animals
-
Playing games
These aren’t just play moments — they’re powerful opportunities for learning. Children develop imagination, communication, collaboration, and confidence through real experiences in the natural world.
