Outdoor Practitioner 

Job Title: Early Years Senior Outdoor Practitioner 


Reports to: Team Leader


Annual Salary: £20,500 to £23,500

Location: Kidderminster

To work as part of The World Outside Team providing early learning and childcare in an outdoor setting to children aged 0 to 5 years and up to 12 years during school holidays. 

To deliver high quality early learning and childcare through the outdoors and to support the Team Leader in the running of The World Outside Kindergarten.

To foster an environment that encourages each child’s development; continually deliver high standards of outdoor early learning and childcare provision to allow each child to reach their full potential.

To assist the Team Leader in ensuring that the provision is of the highest quality and that the service continues to develop and grow.


Main Tasks and Responsibilities to include:


  • Support the Manager in the running of the nursery operations. Take on responsibilities delegated by the Manager.  Be responsible for the services, site and staff in the absence of the Manager or Deputy Manager

  • Deliver hands-on quality early learning and childcare provision, holiday programmes in the outdoors, modelling good practise while undertaking the delivery, taking opportunities to train and teach colleagues as appropriate.

  • Support the Manager to provide inclusive play and learning opportunities for all children attending the setting

  • Contribute to and lead parts of the on-going development of the work including the development of the outdoor site, and continue to develop the ethos of outdoor learning in all the work of the team.

  • Take specific responsibility for a group of children, ensuring they have access to and participate in high quality early years provision.

  • Provide effective and regular feedback to parents.

  • Maintain a safe, stimulating and enjoyable environment.

  • Promote a happy, caring and welcoming atmosphere for children, parents, staff, volunteers and visitors.

  • To liaise with prospective parents to arrange viewings and to provide them with a thorough and positive experience when they do view

  • Assist the Manager with tasks such as maintaining staffing levels and monitoring financial performance in the Manager’s absence.

  • Support the Manager in ensuring the staffs are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people in the setting. 

  • Act as the safeguarding lead in the absence of the Manager, following the prescribed policy and procedures.

  • Oversee the planning, delivery and monitoring of the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework (EYFS) in accordance with the children’s learning and developmental needs.

  • Support the Manager to ensure the setting is actively engaged in continuous quality improvement.

  • Manage other staff on a daily basis as directed by the Manager - including supervising and motivation of volunteers, students and apprentices on work placement or work experience. You could act as a mentor, ensuring new staff are aware of the operational policies and procedures including how to implement and access them.

  • Implement all The World Outside policies and procedures.

  • Assist in the updating of risk assessments, policies and procedures and ensuring they are effective

  • Work in partnership with parents, staff and other professionals.

  • Record and report on the work, progress and development of the children, including daily recording. Maintain portfolios, files and records, ensuring they are always up to date and accurate.

  • Plan quality activities and sessions, when appropriate in line with the Early Stage foundation stage, ensuring that the children’s developmental needs are central. Lead planning as delegated by the Team Leader.

  • Contribute to and lead parts of the on-going development of the work including the development of the outdoor site, and continue to develop the ethos of outdoor learning in all the work of The World Outside team

  •  Actively and fully participate in self-assessment and review processes, leading areas as directed by the Team Leader. Work with the Team Leader to prepare for inspections and visits

  •  Plan quality activities and sessions in line with the early years foundation stage ensuring that the children’s developmental needs are central.

  • . Source and prepare materials for the delivery of sessions.

  • . Undertake appropriate and agreed continuing professional development.

  •  Assist in the planning and implementation of special nursery events.

  • Support the Team Leader in their role and take on delegated responsibilities as and when required.

  • Represent the organisation at external meetings and events when delegated to do so by the Manager.

  • Carry out care, cleaning, maintenance and security of the nursery site and equipment.

  • On occasions, participate in early learning & childcare events, other events, The World Outside activities and training outside of standard working hours.

  • To further the aims and objectives of The World Outside.


  • To undertake personal development through active participation in annual work reviews, supervision and identified training (internal or external) as required.

  • To take part in other The World Outside activities where appropriate.

  • To demonstrate commitment to The World Outside ethos, vision, values and work practices.

  • Represent the World Outside, through effective communication with existing and potential parents, by understanding the parent’s requirements.

  • If required assist with the preparation of material for marketing of the Kindergarten.

  • Other tasks and responsibilities appropriate to the remit will be expected as required.

  • The World Outside may from time to time require you to undertake additional or other duties as necessary to meet the needs of The World Outside on a short term basis e.g. holiday or sickness cover.
